Massage and the Caregiver

By Karrie Osborn

One-third of the US adult population are considered caregivers—those who work on average between 14 and 35 hours a week caring for a loved one. Whether it’s sitting by someone’s hospice bed, holding theirhand, and just being present for them; or theseemingly more stressful tasks of taking your loved one to their doctor appointments, advocating for their health care, making

sure all the doctors on their case are talking and know what the other is doing, and ensuring all the right meds are being taken, caregiving in any situation is exhausting.

Caregivers, however, often don’t realize the stress they are under until they’ve hit a wall. Many say they simply don’t have time to even stop and realize it. Massage is one stress-relieving tool that you, or the caregivers in your life, could look to for respite.

EMOTIONAL EXHAUSTION

Caregivers are growing in numbers as aging baby boomers settle into retirement and the golden years. Their families, friends, and loved ones are often called to assist in this part of the aging process.

In a caregiving role, the emotional component alone is enough to exhaust anyone—what’s harder than living day to day with your heart wide open? Think about it: What kind of emotional energy does it take to remain that present, that open, that ready for the loved one lying in the bed before you?

And all the while, these thoughts race through your mind: What more can I do for her? Am I ready for her to go? Is she ready to go? Is she comfortable? Is she in pain? Is her breathing labored? Does that wince mean she’s in pain?

It’s a never-ending process—until it does end. But, until that moment, it’s one of the most important (and most exhausting) things we can do for another— being present with intention in a caregiver’s role.

CAREGIVER BURNOUT

The Changing Seasons of Bodywork – We are nature. Whether one looks to traditional Chinese medicine, ayurveda, Tibetan medicine, or traditional Native American healing ceremonies, one common thread is that we are not separate from the natural world.

Just as the sun rises and sets, the moon waxes and wanes, and the seasons shift from warm springs to hot summers, and from cool autumns to cold winters, so do human beings fluctuate in ongoing cycles of change. Even in climates with less ebb and flow on the temperature spectrum, there are still wet and dry seasons, and human beings are intimately intertwined with them on a basic biological level.

While this may not be news, how many of us are truly aware of how these environmental fluctuations affect us and our health? Even if we do recognize that our health is affected,

how many of us alter our patterns to support our alignment with the rhythms of nature? Perhaps we drink more warm beverages as the autumn begins to whip around cool, crisp air. That one
is pretty simple. But, have you considered that even the type of bodywork you receive might need to be revised when looking for optimal support of your wellness through seasonal transitions?

Chances are that if you are reading this, you already have some experience with receiving massage. While we most commonly think of massage

as involving a massage table with lotions or oils, and draped sheets for privacy, did you know that there are many kinds of massage you can receive while still keeping your clothes on?

The style of clothed massage you are most likely to be familiar with is chair massage. Available at airports, health fairs, and even in grocery stores, chair massage is easy to give and receive in public places. But the options for clothed massage don’t end with this traditional favorite.

TYPES OF CLOTHED MASSAGE

Many of the techniques used in chair massage are adapted from shiatsu, a type of massage that originated in Japan and literally translates into “finger pressure.” Like acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine, shiatsu uses a system of energy meridians. Techniques used include brushing, compression, kneading, rocking, shaking, stretching, and, of course, thumb pressure, to stimulate the meridians. You do not have to be interested in, or knowledgeable about, meridian theory to feel the effects of a shiatsu massage; simply lie back and enjoy it as you would any other bodywork. Traditionally given on a mat on the floor, shiatsu has also been adapted to the table. While appropriate for relaxation and wellness, it also utilizes passive stretching.

Tui na and Thai massage are two other types of Asian massage. Both use many of the same techniques as shiatsu to ease the recipient into a state of relaxation. The more gentle tui na is generally given on a table, while the more vigorous Thai massage is traditionally given on a floor
mat, though it may be adapted to tables as well.

Acupressure uses the same meridian system as acupuncture, but uses the practitioner’s …Click here for full publication Body Sense-Autumn 2013
